Semi Final Reports & Grand Final Previews - Seniors

Of 6 Senior Teams that made the Finals, just 2 were able to win their way through to their respective Grand Finals. Our 1st XI and 2nd XI teams will represent Berwick Springs CC in their season deciders on March 16 & 17.

1st XI - Turf 4 Semi Final Report We ventured to Hampton Park, and they won the toss and elected to bat first. A very early wicket to Nick Shannon had them 1/0, but they recovered to reach 1/47. It was at this point that Shagga decided to turn this game on it's ear. In the space of a handful of overs, Shagga took 3 more wickets at 2/47, 3/49 and, 4/49 to leave HP reeling. Harry Whitehead made it 5/52 soon after and HP were in tatters. They battled to 5/73, but another 2 quick ones saw them now 7/73 and all of the recognised batsmen now in the shed. We quickly mopped up the tail and rolled HP for 92 after just 31 overs. The bowlers were superb with Nick Shannon 4/22 doing the early damage, then Harry Whitehead 3/34 and Jake Whiting 3/15 cleaning up the rest. With more than 50 overs left in the day, a 1st innings lead was definitely on the cards. This is exactly what happened as we made short work of the target, passing them just one down. After 55 overs, stumps were drawn with us 4/125 at which point HP conceded the game. Luke Kerford 65 led the way with 9 fours & 2 sixes, James Brooks 28 and Arch Vora 19 not out saw us home for a dominant win.

Grand Final - Berwick Springs vs Springvale at Keysborough Reserve
Top side Doveton suffered a humiliating loss to Springvale, so it's 3rd v 4th in the GF at Keysborough. We played Springvale way back in Round 1 at home when we posted 6/279cc (Arch Vora 102 & Vinay Mudumbi 81). This was always going to be too many as we dismissed them for 177 (Jordy McKenzie 3/30). In the return game in Round 6, a one dayer, Springvale got their revenge posting 7/197cc, then dismissing us for 111. As mentioned, its 3rd v 4th. Both teams finished on 58 pts, with an identical win loss record of 8 wins (1 outright win each), 2 draws and 4 losses. Our percentage for the season a mere 0.1% ahead. This is a classic toss of the coin. I think our edge in batting depth will be difference in this game. We lost the least wickets in the division all year, and this will hold us in good stead on a ground where the highest team total is only 226 this season. In fact, 200 was only passed 4 times at Keysborough for the whole season. One all going into the decider but both teams will go in confident after convincing away wins in their Semi. The Titans in a tight one.

2nd XI - Turf 4 Reserves Semi Final Report We hosted Springvale South in the semi and Brayden won the toss and had no hesitation in batting first. All of our batsmen found the going tough as we lost regular wickets from the outset. Parnerships were hard to come by, with 33 being the highest of the innings. We were dismissed for 118 which looked way below par. Jeremy Valentine 21, Bailey Paroissien 19, Lachlan Ballingall 15 & Kevin Tissera 15 were the only players to reach double figures. Extras was top scorer with 22 showed how tough scoring runs was in our innings. Still, we had 118 on the board as we took the field. Nobody could imagine what was about to take place as we began our defence of a mediocre total. In stepped Corey Roberts who got 2 early ones, as SS reached 2/16. Corey had the ball on a string as he destroyed the SS batting lineup from that point on. SS lost 8/13 as they plummetted to 29 all out from 33 overs. Corey finished with an amzing 8/8 from 17 overs (11 maidens) in an amazing performance. Corey now holds 3 of the 5 best bowling figures in our short history. 2 of those were in finals. After the rout, we enforced the follow on with a lead of 89. SS could not mount a challenge, reaching 8/79 in their 2nd dig, before the game was called off. Corey continued on, removing both openers and finishing with 2/21 (match figures of 10/29). Harry Bell 2/16 & Blake Sully 2/17 then got amongst it as we soared into the Grand Final.

Grand Final - Berwick Springs vs Dingley at Max Pawsey Reserve (Fountain Gate)
The 2 top teams meet in the GF. We finished 8 points and a sizable percentage ahead of our opponents. Dingley won their semi against Springvale quite easily, by almost an innings, so they will be full of confidence. We faced each other just once during the season, in Round 11 at Dingley. They batted first and posted just 104 from 55 very tight overs. Jeremy Valentine 3/17 & Ben DeKoning 3/18 led the bowling that day. We had a few hairy moments in the chase, passing them 6 down on the way to 183. Young gun Bailey Paroissien 55 played a beautiful innings at no.7. Brayden Tisdale 28, Munir Safi 22 & Harry Fernando 20 all made handy contributions.

If scores at this ground through the season are any indication, runs will be tough to come by this week. 200 was passed just 3 times (T3 & T3 Reserves) all season, with a highest total of 6/281. This was an exceptional total, considering teams were bowled out for less than 100 on 8 separate occasions on this ground. Every run will be vital on a neutral ground and an unfamiliar track. The Titans have been the best team in T4 Ressies this season by a fair margin, but Grand Finals are a totally different proposition. With Corey Roberts coming off a dream performance, and well supported by Harry Bell & Blake Sully, these 3 have taken over 80 wickets between them this season, I think we can hold Dingley to a low total, which our batsmen will manage in their stride.
